On the Rocks

This has been a very difficult week as far as my art goes.  I have wiped off almost every painting I started, some close to being finished.  I must be going through a transition.  I know what I want the finished product to look like, but my mind and hand aren't cooperating with each other :-)  Here is a painting I started months ago and never was happy with it.  I have gone back to it a number of times, and I've decided it's as done as it's going to be.  I figured I might as well post it anyway....

This is how most of us who become artists start out. You can't get a better canvas than a Brownstone stoop.  I have painted Rocky before, and I must say he is turning into one of my favorite subjects.  I'm pretty sure his father helped him with the face, but you can see him starting one of his own.  It's so cool that they live in this part of  Brooklyn because that's where my parents and his great grandparents lived.  Probably not too many blocks from this building.  Life's all a big circle, isn't it?!

Even though museums do not let anyone touch the artwork, I really do feel that it is the ultimate compliment for a viewer to actually take the time to really look and even think about touching a piece of art. To me, it shows that he or she is thinking about the process and really appreciates the work being shown.  So, here is "a viewer" (and a fine artist) contemplating a masterful piece of work hanging at our gallery.

Art On the Go

I really love watching Plein Air painters at work.  They are usually so engrossed in what they are doing, they don't even focus on the crowd that is watching them.  I, on the other hand, always feel I have to talk to everyone.  (I can hear all my friends saying "Surprise, Surprise.")  I also tend to feel like I'm at an audition and people are judging every stroke I make.  My plan for 2013 is to change all that and just go out there and paint.  Bugs are another issue.  I'm the one you will see running around swatting at insects with my brush...A friend told me that Listerine keeps the bugs away.  Well, I sprayed it all over me and the bugs loved it.  Meanwhile, I smelled "Minty Fresh" for weeks, as did all my art supplies.  So, resolutions for 2013...Paint Plein Air and really enjoy it, and start talking to the bugs.  Maybe they'll get bored and go away :-)
