January Tulips

A good friend brought these beautiful red tulips to me for Christmas.  I am not really comfortable painting flowers, but they were so lovely I had to try.  I'm not sure why flowers intimidate me, but I approached this subject as I've been doing lately with everything.. as just shapes.  The name of certain objects seems to get in the way of just expressing what I see and feel.  This still life was done at my kitchen table using my little Gorilla box…on a cold, gray, snowy day.  

Cottage by the Water

Can you feel the breezes off the water?  After what felt like a long winter, I'm ready for the ocean and the lake; the smell of wet sand, salt water, fresh water...whatever brings you to that place in your mind.  I wanted this little painting to feel like you were passing by and peeking in to get a look at the house half hidden behind the landscape.  A drive by, or walk by, or bike ride by.

These people owns a beautiful inn in Maine that we stayed at.  I caught them here pruning their gorgeous flowers and shrubs.  I loved the composition and gave it a go.  The shadows and sunlight was what I was after.

End of the Day, Winnie's Garden

Day's End at Shining Sails Inn on Monhegan Island.  The last light hitting the flowers behind the inn.  One wouldn't think that flowers would grow so beautifully on Monhegan , a rock in the middle of the ocean off the coast of Maine.  It is truly an enchanted place and a feast for an artist's eyes.

I set this still life up to paint as a study for a larger painting and to work out all the kinks, but now that it's finished I really like the size, looseness, and spontaneity of it.  I'm enjoying working from life.  There is a totally different feel to my paintings, I think.  I'm also still  amazed at the colors I can get from those three primaries.  I now realize that I didn't need to purchase every paint color imaginable from the Blick catalog :-) 

Daisy Days

A few years ago we planted a few daisies.  Few being the key word.  This year they have taken over almost the entire front flower bed.  Guests have to push them aside or plod through them to get to our front door.  I decided to cut them and bring them in, so here are just a few that I stuck in a little vase.  I painted this as a fast study in preparation for one of the larger bouquets...Yes, I do have a number of larger bouquets all over the house.  There are still more out there that haven't opened yet.  Anyone want some daisies???

This is part of a beautiful bouquet from our community supported agriculture farm.  Not only was it beautiful to look at and paint, but it smelled so fresh and herbal.  It was a surprise to see what kinds of flowers I would get along with my vegetables.  Can't wait until my next pick up!

Tallulah and the Lilacs

This is Tallulah (our Sproodle) checking out my first lilacs of the season.  I'm not sure if she was just enjoying the smell or planning on eating them...Either way, she was really interested in them.  This painting isn't as blue as it appears here.  Not sure why this color thing happened, but the background is much more subtle.  I will try to take another photo of it and re-post at some point.

Old Gardening Shed

A weathered gardening shed that would not have been very interesting to me if not for the beautiful flowers in the foreground.  A departure from the commissions that I have been doing and really enjoyable to paint!  Now, back to the commissions for a bit.

First Blooms

Isn't it funny how each Spring we get so excited about the first blooms we see?!  It's like we haven't seen Spring before.  That's why I like the change of seasons so much.  We forget how wonderful each season is until the following one is upon us.  This painting was done with left over paints on my palette, so very limited and lots of mixing.  Happy Spring! 

Geraniums in an Old Maine Window

The window here was in a very old house that was in bad shape and needed a lot of repair work done.  The paint was peeling and there were all sorts of paint colors showing through.  The geraniums were a welcome change to an otherwise dreary interior. 

Foodie

I have painted this man before in pastel, but I thought it would be fun to paint him again in oil.  I think he is one of my favorite subjects to paint.  I'm not sure why, but I think it might be the intensity he had at the buffet table.  He obviously takes his food seriously.  I caught him at one of my art show opening receptions and have seen him a few times since.  The odd thing is that he is usually wearing similar clothing and is usually at the buffet table when I see him.  I've grown attached to this man, stranger though he may be :-)

Bouquet

We had out-of-town company recently and to make their guest room cheerful and inviting, I got a bouquet of flowers. They served their purpose, and I got to paint them after they left.  I have a lot of respect for artists who paint such beautiful florals now.  This was not an easy painting for me.  As a matter of fact, there were a number of times I wanted to toss it out the window...and then stomp on it.  As I've said before, it is what it is (that's getting to be my mantra).  I stuck with it and am happy with the results....Mostly because it's a done deal :-) 

Spring!

Playing with color!  This was just plain fun :-)  It started out as pansies but, technically, I'm not sure it wound up that way.  Just pretty complimentary colors.  The actual painting is more vibrant than what is displayed here, and it does really pop.  Flowers are always a departure for me; however, I'm beginning to love painting them.  I should call this "Yellow Sort Of Pansies."
