What a better way to say "Happy Easter" than to paint an adorable child in a very large hat?! When I paint a portrait, after sketching in the shape of the face I work on the eyes. If I can nail that part of the face, I feel like the painting has become alive. This is beautiful Ellery Ann. HAPPY EASTER/PASSOVER EVERYONE!

Aquarium Fascination

First visit to the aquarium, and total fascination.  The lighting was a challenge as well as the skin tones under those lights.  I love to take on these issues to see if I can pull them off and give them life.  I'm pretty satisfied here.

You know how some paintings seem to paint themselves.  Well, this one definitely didn't!  It absolutely has to do with my focusing on so many other things right now.  I struggled with it for two days and am finally satisfied....Or I'm forcing myself to be satisfied :-)

On another note, I am honored that my artwork was juried into the 2015 Biennial Juried Exhibition at Olin Hall Galleries in Roanoke, Virginia.  Doug McClemont, who is a writer and curator in NYC, is the juror of the show.  The juror lecture and awards will be March 13th at 6 PM at the Olin Gallery. 

Also in March, I will have the honor, along with fellow artist and friend, Nancy Rae Brown, to be the Featured Artist for the month at Second Helpings Gallery in Roanoke, Virginia.  More on this to come....

Licking the Bowl

Who doesn't like to lick the whipped cream bowl??  I'm pretty sure we all did it.  Whatever was in the bowl seemed to taste much better than the final product.  I think it still does :-)

Beach in Fall

While I was painting this, I kept thinking about the Eagles song "Boys of Summer."  "...Nobody on the beach..."  In my opinion, after the boys of summer have gone is the best time to be at the shore.  Just you, the gulls, and the mighty ocean.  A quick study that I like a lot :-)

Sun Goddess

I started this painting while sitting at an Artisan Open House.  My friend was with me, happily painting a rural scene with horses...I, naturally, was painting a young woman clad only in a bikini.  In the background was good old country music played by a man with the greatest country face ever.  (You can be sure he will appear on my blog one of these days).  I know people who stopped to watch were a little perplexed by my choice of subject.  From my place on the porch, my only option painting plein air would have been parked trucks....Though come to think of it, I probably would have had a large group of men around me.  As it was, I did get a few men looking at the bikini :-)  I had a very limited palette with me, so I played a little with the color.  Funky and Fun!

A Girl and Her Companion

Do any of you remember Woody Allen's "Sleeper?"  The whole time I was painting this I couldn't get it out of my mind, and I haven't seen it in quite a while.  The movie takes place in the future, and everything is controlled by the Leader, who is seen as the national TV signs off each night.  The scene is the back of the Leader, in a wheelchair, with his hand on his dog beside him.  At least that's how I remember it.  As I said it's been a while. This painting really reminds me of it, silly as that is.  I think it's the staring off into the future thing.  The colors did not come out too well in the photo of the painting.  Everything has a greenish hue, but you get the idea...Hopefully.

Barista with a Flair

OK..I really enjoyed painting this until I had to think about the stacked cups.  I really learned a lot about wiping off and repainting on this piece.  I changed the background approximately three times.  I'm pretty happy with the results.  The barista was my main focus.  Loved her matching hat and sweater against the orange background.  So here it is, a relatively small piece that took a really long time :-)

Beach Pick-Up

I find it really interesting that most of us, when walking along the shore, stop and pick up stuff.  Everything seems like a terrific find.  Then, we get home and wonder why we pocketed what we found.  Even shells.  I always collect them as I walk, looking for one that is perfect.  I bring it back and wonder what to do with it.  They usually wind up in the garbage.  It's like that Updike quote...actually one of my favorites ..."Possession diminishes perception of value, immediately."

Winding down the summer beach theme as Fall sets in...  I'm not quite sure whether this young girl was pulling her brother out of the water or pushing him in.  I prefer to think she was protecting him by keeping him from danger;  however, that might be wishful thinking on my part. This little painting is just a study of movement.  Something I enjoy so very much :-)

Cold, Wet, and Camera Shy

Here's Emily, not listening to my command "OK..Smile!"  I probably would not have painted it if she had smiled for the camera.  It wouldn't have been as interesting to me.  This was a chilly, rainy day, but the kids wanted to swim.  It really didn't matter to them, because they were getting wet anyway, but for the adults on the dock it kind of mattered :-)

This painting was done from an old photo and it was in black and white.  I'm a little embarrassed to tell you it's me.  I learned pretty fast that I got what I wanted with that expression.  Unfortunately, it doesn't work anymore...  I've tried  :-)  I did a series of these paintings from my old photos.  I'm just glad my parents thought to take lots of pictures.
